Manuka honey is obtained from the flowers of the Leptospermum scoparium plant, which grows exclusively in New Zealand.

Every spring, white flowers appear on the plant, which are pollinated by honey bees. The flowers have a distinctive aroma and are full of nectar - this is what gives the honey its unique creamy texture.

How to use
Manuka honey with the MGO™ label is suitable for daily use, even over a longer period of time. It can be consumed or applied directly to the skin. It has a great taste and can be used like regular honey.

The numbers don't let go
You may have noticed cheaper "Manuka honeys" in stores - for example in England. But the price and labels themselves indicate that these are often counterfeit products. Manuka honey is one of the most commonly adulterated foods because it is a natural product with limited production.
In 2013, it was statistically proven that the annual harvest of Manuka honey in New Zealand was 1,700 tons, while global consumption was estimated at up to 10,000 tons.

HMF in honey
Some "beekeepers" heat Manuka honey because it increases the content of MGO, the substance responsible for its exceptional properties. This increases the price, but at the same time destroys other valuable substances.
Whether the honey has been overheated is determined by a test for the undesirable substance HMF (hydroxymethylfurfural).
